Keep the medium’s identity with the plant
Record the exact growing medium, its intended use and any nutrients already included. A bag described as compost can mean different things in different markets. The RHS distinguishes garden compost used as a soil improver from seed or potting compost formulated for container use. Choose for the plant and container, and retain the relevant label rather than assuming that every bag with an earthy name is interchangeable.

Treat feeding as its own measured action
Watering and applying a feed are different entries in a care record. Identify the product and variant, the plant use on its label and the applicable directions before making a mixture. Keep the concentration, prepared quantity and date together. Do not infer that an unhappy-looking plant needs more feed, or add several products because their individual labels each sound beneficial.
Describe a change before naming its cause
Take a clear view of the whole plant and the affected part, then note when the change began. Record location, recent care and anything that changed in the environment. Leaf color or shape alone is not a diagnosis. These observations help a local extension service or qualified adviser assess the question without the history being lost behind a guessed label.
Change the plan with a reason you can record
When reliable guidance calls for an adjustment, record what changed and when. Keep the earlier observations so a later comparison has context. A change in growth after several interventions does not reveal which one caused it.
